Alps: The name is the plural of ‚Alb’ and goes back to an ancient word for “high meadow”. If you like, the term “Alps” stands for the economic use of these “alpine heights” as pasture land. Today, tourism in the Alps stands for economy, recreation and quality of life.

51 SAULGRUB – OBERAMMERGAU

All information on the route

On the stage of the Via Romea between Saulgrub and Oberammergau, we finally reach the mountains of the Alps and pass through the region of the Ammergauer Alps. The villages of “Altenau” and “Scherenau” mark the entrance to the mountains, up to 1700 metres high in our field of view.

52 OBERAMMERGAU – GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN

The stage on the pilgrim trail of the VIA ROMEA from “Oberammergau” to “Garmisch-Partenkirchen” is characterized by the mountains of the Ammergauer Alps in the Bavarian “Oberland” and the “Werdenfelder Land”. The route leads via “Ettal”, “Oberau” and “Farchant”.

53 GARMISCH-PARTENKIRCHEN – KLAIS

The route from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Klais leads us along the federal road B2. On the way we enjoy beautiful views of the “Wetterstein” mountains and the “Alpspitze”.

On the last day stage on the VIA ROMEA in Germany, we go from Klais to Mittenwald. The border and the first stage in Austria, Scharnitz, is not far from here.
